Why you are here

If you're here that means you have an interest in learning how to search more efficiently on our website. Not all search engines are created equally and sometimes you have to get creative to get where and what you want.

Searching for something you want can be a frustrating experience, often marked by a serious lack of results. People can sometimes be too specific in what they're trying to find. I like to think of an acronym I learned once: K.I.S.S.

  • Keep
  • It
  • Simple
  • Stupid

Calm down, we know you're not stupid. It just means, for searching to keep your terms as broad as possible.

For example lets say you're searching for a John Deere 4020 Wide Front Precision Classic #4 in 1/16 Scale. It's pretty obvious you're not going to type in that whole thing if you want any results at all to be accurate. To keep it more simple you can try typing in "4020" and yes, it will bring up a large list of possibilities. From there you can scan the list of results or if you prefer, narrow it down using the options on the left. For 4020 there are options, you can select it to only show the Toys, Customizing pieces intended for 4020 or Decals for the 4020.

The nice thing about keeping your first search broad is you can come up with unexpected results and stumble onto potential treasures.

We at Bossen Implement help some collectors sell their toy collections through consignment. They let us advertise and sell their treasures on their behalf. To differentiate different consigners from our regular stock they are assigned a consigner number. This too is searchable on our website. Let's say you wanted to search out all the items that consigner # 1 had to offer. In the search box you would type "*c0001". The star is a universal wild card that works quite well in this instance to gather the current list of products that Mister #1 has to offer.

Also searchable is the base number of our stock numbers. For instance, ERT266 is a 1/16 scale Case 3294 MFD. When these tips were written there are many varieties of the ERT266 available. I searched 266 and it returned 6 results. All of the stock numbers varied but they all contained the 266. Success!

Someone else may be a diehard collector of toys by a certain manufacturer like Ertl or Scale Models. You can also search by the name of the manufacturer. Searching for Ertl is easy because it's only 1 word. For companies like Scale Models or Universal Hobbies surround the search term with quotation marks like this "Scale Models" that way it looks at everything between the quotations marks as 1 term instead of as two separate words, avoiding bringing back unwanted results.

Above all else, don't lose heart if you don't find what you really want after your first search. Play with the search engine, it's only a dumb animal and it doesn't know very many tricks. Perhaps given time you can learn to press its buttons and find what you need.
